About the Blue Book Traineeship
Twice a year, the European Commission opens one of the most sought-after entry points into EU institutions: the Blue Book Traineeship programme. This five-month paid traineeship gives participants hands-on experience in EU policymaking and administration, professional skills development across real institutional work, and intercultural awareness and personal growth, working alongside colleagues from across Europe.
Trainees don't just sit in one office, either. Placements span the European Commission, its executive agencies, decentralised agencies or bodies, Commissioners' Cabinets, and the European External Action Service.
Why You Should Apply
| Benefit | Description |
|---|---|
| Paid Placement | Not an unpaid internship |
| EU Policy Exposure | Hands-on policymaking experience |
| Professional Development | Skills development across EU institutions |
| Intercultural Experience | Work with colleagues from across Europe |
| Diverse Placements | Commission, agencies, cabinets, EEAS |
| Career Pathway | Gateway to EU careers |
New This Year: Dedicated VET Track
For the first time, the programme includes a traineeship specifically designed for vocational education and training (VET) graduates — not just university degree holders. This meaningfully widens who can realistically apply, opening the door to candidates with technical and vocational backgrounds who previously had fewer routes into EU institutions.
Three Application Tracks
| Track | Target Group |
|---|---|
| Administrative Traineeship (University) | University graduates |
| Administrative Traineeship (VET) | Vocational education and training graduates |
| Translation Traineeship | Translation graduates |
Note: Applicants can only submit one application per session, per traineeship type.

CareerFlora Expert Insight
The Blue Book Traineeship is consistently highlighted as one of the best EU internships. It's genuinely paid, placement locations span some of the most influential institutions in EU governance, and the multicultural work environment is consistently valued by former trainees.
The new VET track makes this one of the more accessible EU traineeships for non-university graduates. With only two sessions per year, missing the deadline means waiting months for the next cycle.
