Why does a real .ico matter, versus just renaming a PNG?

A proper .ico can bundle several sizes in one file so browsers and Windows pick the right one for each spot — a renamed PNG only ever has one resolution, which looks soft or pixelated everywhere else it's used.

Which sizes do I actually need?

At minimum 16×16 and 32×32 inside favicon.ico, plus a 180×180 Apple touch icon. Use the "Full package" preset if you also want Android home-screen and PWA manifest icons.
